Halogen National Young Leaders Day- Conference

Our Year 6 Student Leaders attended the Halogen National Young Leaders Conference at the Perth Convention Centre on Wednesday 18th February. It was a fantastic day, both fun and educational. They had the opportunity to listen to and meet some truly inspiring speakers:

His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia, shared his experiences leading through challenging times, including managing the state of emergency during COVID-19 and navigating critical decisions in complex situations such as the Cleo child abduction case. His advice about leadership, resilience, and facing the media was very insightful.

Geoff Regan, the first Aboriginal person to be fully employed at WA’s Government House since white settlement. He was a talented footballer who represented 3 states/territories but his footy career was ended early by injury. This highlighted the importance of having a Plan B and adapting when life doesn’t go as expected. We learnt about how doors can close on us unexpectedly but others can be opened.

Thomas Duncan-Watt, author and screenwriter, reminded us that “every master was once a disaster.” He shared funny stories of his many failures and successes, from writing popular kids’ TV shows and a Kleenex advertisement (“Love Your Nose”) to authoring the Seekers of Lost Cavern book series and co-creating That Golden Girls Show: A Puppet Parody. His ultimate dream is to write episodes for Star Trek.

Bree Del Borrello, nurse and volunteer ambulance officer with St John WA in Lancelin, named 2025 WA Young Volunteer of the Year, spoke about overcoming a difficult childhood home-life and building a career dedicated to helping others. She encouraged students to pursue their dreams despite challenges, and to seek support from friends and family when needed. She also emphasised the importance of volunteering in our community.

Catherine Lagaʻaia, a Sydney-based teen actress of Samoan descent, shared her journey as she was selected as lead role in the live-action Disney Moana film, coming out in cinemas this year. She humorously recounted failures along the way, including how she accidentally punched Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson square in the face during filming. She emphasised persistence and learning from mistakes. Her father, well-known actor and singer Jay Lagaʻaia, who has appeared in Star Wars and Play School, was also there yesterday and some of our leaders got his autograph.
